WONG: Today Thai police continue to search for six missing tourists and one local after their boat sank on Sunday near the shore of Phuket. The boat, carrying scuba divers, was hit by strong winds and waves. STORY: Thai police continued to search for six foreign scuba divers and one national today after a boat carrying 30 people sank near the island of Phuket. The navy says it will send a helicopter to patrol the area and will send a boat if something is found. The missing include two Swiss, two Austrians, one German, one Japanese and one Thai. Some 23 people, mainly foreigners, were rescued and sent to hospitals after being found drifting on a life raft. [Viset Ketphun, Thai Police]: "We have coordinated with embassies and asked them to inform the relatives of victims about what happened. We also sent the injured survivors to the hospitals and all of them are safe and have returned to their hotels." The Phuket Community Foundation or PCF, led by its president Assistant Professor Pranee Sakulpipatana, held its first charity fund-raising race day last Saturday November 7 at Laguna Phuket compound in the Canal Village. Students from Phuket International Academy performed amusing dances on stage during the opening ceremony The new Vice Governor of Phuket, Tirayud Eamtrakul, also came & gave a speech, joining other VIPS such as Michael Ayling, MD of Laguna. The Race Day was full of non-stop sporting & fun events for all the many visiting families. It opened on the laguna lake with watersports like a kayak or canoe race, where I (Alex) and our Andaman News producer joined up to compete with 8 other crews, some very fast & professional looking sea-canoeists, some just families or friends out for a laugh. The Dragon Boat races among local teams were exciting as they were cheered and drummed along the course. Later on they planned a cardboard box race & Muay Talay or Boxing over water, even with rainstorms forecast so everyone was bound to get very wet and keep cool. The US beach volleyball women teams won 1st, 2nd & 4th, while Russia won 3rd place in the Phuket Thailand Open at Karon last weekend. Last Sunday, the Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop & a big crowd arrived at the enlarged volleyball area beside Karon beach, for the finals of the Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT, the biggest in size with record number of 66 teams from 28 countries taking part on the Swatch FIVB World Tour for women's beach volleyball. The finals were beamed live by NBT TV nationwide & worldwide with recordings bringing a potential amazing audience of over 2 billion. In the 3rd/4th place match, Maria Bratkova and Evgenia Ukolova of Russia (in white) won their country's first-ever bronze medals with a lot of support from Russian fans in the crowd. They came back from one set down to win 15-21, 22-20 and 15-9 win in an exciting 53 minutes against Lauren Fendrick and Ashley Ivy of USA. Sawadee Ka, Today Im here at British International School, at a football tournament for about 700 students from international schools in Asia. This was the 7th annual football tournament, held on 14-15 November at British International School or BIS. On the final day, we first saw a good goal scored by BIS girls under 13 year olds, here in blue shirts, against Tanglin Trust School from Singapore in green shirts. The girls played exciting football. BIS eventually won the game 2-0, to gain 3rd place in their category. I talked to some of the BIS girls afterwards: (Josie, 12, .. Alex, 13 .. Dina, 12) Then we watched Saint Stephens Khao Yai in Thailand here in yellow, against International School of Kuala Lumpur or ISKL in blue. This was a tougher game as they were older, under 13 years old, and one of them got injured. ISKL scored great goals, winning 5-0 in the final of their category. After winning, they made an arch for the players and rolled over in celebration. STORY: The governor of Phuket presided over the ceremony in Patong Beach. Survivors and victims relatives gathered at a monument at Loma Park which pays tribute to lives lost from the natural disaster. The mourners observe a minute of silence and offer alms in tribute to the souls of the victims. Many survivors returned to Phuket to remember the day and give thanks for their blessings. About half of the over 5000 deaths in Thailand were foreigners. They were residing or vacationing at the famous resorts of Patong Beach and other coastal provinces in the south. [Stephen Sumpion, British Survivor]: "We feel very sad, very confused. We didn't know what was happening at first. But then, as the day progressed, we found out there have been a big wave. We went up to the mountain and stayed up there most of the day. But then the next day we came back there was total devastation. As part of our Thai studies curriculum, we held a Loy Krathong Festival to enhance students' understanding of Thai culture. We started out this morning making Krathongs out of banana trees, banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense. Parents also came along to join in the Krathong-making. Students came to school in Thai costumes and performed dances, fencing and a Loy Krathong play. Let's listen and watch some highlights One of the more popular performances was the teacher's dance: Pamela Wetzell, Director, thanked all the participants and parents. As many as 130 booths showcasing various types of flora and ornamental pants are being set up at the Phuket Floral and Ornamental plants being held at the Saphan Hin area from today until August 2nd. The fair is arranged by the provincial Agriculture Office with an aim to promote floral markets and the farming industry. According to the provincial Chief of Agriculture, Mr. Somchai Hengwatcharapaiboon, the fair will comprise exhibitions on agriculture, farming, kitchen herbs, floral and ornamental plants sales and contests. He expects a minimum of 40 million baht sales volume from the fair. Item 8--- Phuket & Krabi Airports statistics for 6 months to June 2009 show 13 & 16% decreases. The Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, which manages Phuket International Airport, have confirmed to Andaman News about their latest statistics for the first 6 months of the year 2009. They showed a total of 18402 aircraft movements, down 14.65% from the same period in 2008. In June 2009 alone, there were 2617 movements down 7.10%. The total numbers of arriving, departing and transit passengers in the first 6 months of the year, was 2800790 showing a decrease of 13.28% compared to the same 6 months in 2008: in June 2009 alone there were 341923 passengers down 8.60%. Songkran or as it is now known as the Thai New Year started in Lanna around 700 hundred years ago. Then the Lanna Kingdom comprised of North and Northeast Thailand, parts of Laos, Burma and southern Yunnan Province China. Songkran today is still celebrated in these areas except Burma where it has been banned by the military government there. Songkran was not celebrated in the rest of Thailand until around the 1950?s. In Bangkok then most of the workers, as today, came from the north or northeast part of Thailand. When Songkran came around, April 13 ? 15, most of the workers just left work and went to their villages for the New Year. For this reason the government and most businesses had to shut down for Songkran. For this reason this is now an official holiday in Thailand. The meaning of water during Songkran is very important. Pouring water on each other and Buddha statues is to wash away the past and a cleansing for the future year. This started as just pouring water on the hands or on the shoulder of others with a small cup of water. This has now grown into the largest water fight on the planet. Here is a short streaming video of the festival over a two day period. The first day, April 13, is the Songkran parade, which takes place on Muangchareon and Thapae roads at 2 PM and lasts around 3 hours. We then hit the streets to join the water fight mostly concentrated along the moat in the city center.

Phuket carries out aggressive campaign against the wide spread Chikungunya virus. Like many areas, Pakloks local government led health volunteers, community leaders and students to educate residents about the Chikungunya virus and how to protect themselves. They distributed pamphlets, mosquito repellent, sprayed at canal and ditch water sources to eradicate mosquito eggs. At least 30 people from Paklok village are being treated for the virus. This is due to its fertility in forest trees. The provincial Chief Doctor Pongsawas Rattanasang reported that since January 1st until May 21st, 225 people in Phuket have been reported and hospitalized for the virus but he believed some more sought treatment from clinics. The cases are found mostly in Srisunthorn, followed by Thepkasarti and Cherng Thalay village. Meanwhile the provincial Public Health Office held a seminar with related agencies and networks to discuss measures and collaboration to handle diseases and communicable diseases. The provincial Deputy Chief Doctor Wiwat Sritamanoj concluding the seminar result said health teams will be set up in 3 districts to map out proactive measures and deploy personnel in to communities in case of epidemics. They will also take paramedics in when notified of cases. The Phuket Summer Season campaign is organizing a massive Clean Up Phuket day this afternoon or tomorrow on almost every beach. Anyone who has ever visited, is Thailand know the beauty of Thai women. In their twenties, they are striking. In his thirties, they look more mature, but still most are very attractive.

The women work in the ubiquitous bars and massage parlors of Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and are mostly former housewives, believe it or not, married but separated, with two children she left behind in their village with their mothers. Most are from Isaan, the northeast cornerThailand, which has a large amount of poverty. Some are from other parts of the country, especially in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and a few are from Bangkok and central Thailand.

But in about 1100 is not a female at all, but a "ladyboy" or katoey in Thai. They often appear more female genuine as the women. I have seen many farang ogle and lust after a very sexy woman, not knowing that "she" is a "he."

Like women, most ladyboys from Isaan. I have a sayingfew on 1-1 basis, and she asked when she first knew she wanted to be a woman. All said they knew early on about 5 or 6 years old. They said they wanted the female way, not like rough sports, were partial to art and music.

Katoeys are an accepted part of Thai culture, as are a third sex in Thailand. Several movie stars and TV announcers. One is a national kick-boxing champion. You will find ladyboys everywhere, working as waiters, shop assistants,Hairdressers, couriers, etc.

In North America and Europe, a sex-change (also as a gender reassignment) operation as a great thing to be, many months of psychological counseling required before surgery to ensure that the person is required to change that.

28 / 12 / 2004 - Tsunami in Phuket - Thailand Two days after the Tsunami I left Belgium. Helping families in need was our goal. We arrived in Phuket with 44 coffins and 500 kg of embalming products and welding material. We stayed 8 days helping families to find and repatriate there beloved one. It is only after my return that I realized all the horror I had lived. Emotionally it had become impossible to me to keep on helping other families. Today, 5 years later, I feel the need to go back to supporting and helping families. I will always keep the memory of everything I went through in Phuket after the Tsunami. However, I now remember how grateful the families I helped were. In the meantime I made the mourning of my suffering too and I feel the strength, the need and the motivation to help families again. I usually do a quick 20 minute continuous lap just to cool down after a long ocean swim. I love these swimming pools and try to hit one of them at least once a day, sometimes I wonder if I spend more time in the water than I do on land, well that is one of the reasons why I love Phuket so much, I just love the water. Just taking a swim in the beautiful Andaman Sea is one of the most joyous things I like to do. After two hours on board the Thai Airways flight to Bangkok, wedisembark for flight to Nong Khai, a border town between Thailand and Laos on the banks of the Mekong River.
