Each year in Phuket province, locals celebrate the Vegetarian Festival around September and October. It is said that long ago, a traveling Chinese opera group fell ill in Phuket and by praying to certain gods and eating only vegetarian food, they recovered. They celebrated their recovery by organizing a festival honoring the gods. This eventually became the festival we know today. During the festival, participants are believed to be possessed by gods. To prove this claim they inflict pain upon themselves by various means of self-mutilation, piercing and fire-walking. (Video by Jetjaras Na Ranong, Bangkok Post Staff Photographer)
