Tourist Boat Sinks in Phuket

WONG: Today Thai police continue to search for six missing tourists and one local after their boat sank on Sunday near the shore of Phuket. The boat, carrying scuba divers, was hit by strong winds and waves. STORY: Thai police continued to search for six foreign scuba divers and one national today after a boat carrying 30 people sank near the island of Phuket. The navy says it will send a helicopter to patrol the area and will send a boat if something is found. The missing include two Swiss, two Austrians, one German, one Japanese and one Thai. Some 23 people, mainly foreigners, were rescued and sent to hospitals after being found drifting on a life raft. [Viset Ketphun, Thai Police]: "We have coordinated with embassies and asked them to inform the relatives of victims about what happened. We also sent the injured survivors to the hospitals and all of them are safe and have returned to their hotels." Alex & Jane: "We're here at the Phuket Community Foundation race Day in Laguna. There are lots of activities & races. Let's go race! Quack! Quack!" The Phuket Community Foundation or PCF, led by its president Assistant Professor Pranee Sakulpipatana, held its first charity fund-raising race day last Saturday November 7 at Laguna Phuket compound in the Canal Village. Students from Phuket International Academy performed amusing dances on stage during the opening ceremony The new Vice Governor of Phuket, Tirayud Eamtrakul, also came & gave a speech, joining other VIPS such as Michael Ayling, MD of Laguna. The Race Day was full of non-stop sporting & fun events for all the many visiting families. It opened on the laguna lake with watersports like a kayak or canoe race, where I (Alex) and our Andaman News producer joined up to compete with 8 other crews, some very fast & professional looking sea-canoeists, some just families or friends out for a laugh. The Dragon Boat races among local teams were exciting as they were cheered and drummed along the course. Later on they planned a cardboard box race & Muay Talay or Boxing over water, even with rainstorms forecast so everyone was bound to get very wet and keep cool. Football Tournament at BIS Int School Phuket

We turn now to our Young Reporter Student Intern about an international football tournament at British International School Phuket for children from many schools. Lets join her now. Hurrah! Sawadee Ka, Today Im here at British International School, at a football tournament for about 700 students from international schools in Asia. This was the 7th annual football tournament, held on 14-15 November at British International School or BIS. On the final day, we first saw a good goal scored by BIS girls under 13 year olds, here in blue shirts, against Tanglin Trust School from Singapore in green shirts. The girls played exciting football. BIS eventually won the game 2-0, to gain 3rd place in their category. I talked to some of the BIS girls afterwards: (Josie, 12, .. Alex, 13 .. Dina, 12) Then we watched Saint Stephens Khao Yai in Thailand here in yellow, against International School of Kuala Lumpur or ISKL in blue. This was a tougher game as they were older, under 13 years old, and one of them got injured. ISKL scored great goals, winning 5-0 in the final of their category. After winning, they made an arch for the players and rolled over in celebration. As part of our peace celebration, we made peace flags and giant dove puppets from reused materials to fly in our parade. The dove has been a symbol for peace and love for centuries. 2nd Phuket Lifesaving carnival

" The Phuket Lifeguard Club hosted their 2nd and rearranged Lifesaving Carnival last Saturday 3 October near Loma Park at Patong Beach, after the previously planned event in July was cancelled due to bad weather. At least this time it stayed dry and cool but was still windy and the strong waves made it very tough for the swimmers, probably putting off some of the younger participants like us or their parents from having a go, even though it was free for kids under 15 and very cheap for the others to enter. The carnival featured lifesaving events in eight categories for adults and less for younger competitors. As part of our Thai studies curriculum, we held a Loy Krathong Festival to enhance students' understanding of Thai culture. We started out this morning making Krathongs out of banana trees, banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense. Parents also came along to join in the Krathong-making. Students came to school in Thai costumes and performed dances, fencing and a Loy Krathong play. And today the provincial hall has got another brand new building beside it, which maintains the same attractive architectural style. Our reporter went to explore the building This is a typical but not ordinary monthly meeting of head officials in Phuket. What is different is that time they have a meeting in a brand new building, located in the same compound of the existing one. The two storey building is spacious with two meeting rooms which can accommodate up to 200 people. The meeting yesterday was considered as a trial session for the new facility. At present 4 government departments have moved in to use the building. They include the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and Social Development and Human Stability Office. The governor Mr. Nirun Kalayanamit said the new building will also be used as command centre in case of any emergency. Built with a 28 million baht budget, the Sino-Portuguese attractive architectural style is worth following and maintaining, both internally and externally.
